Worth a gander

A badger and squirrel play a chess-like game with ornate pieces clothed in decorated robes.

Shuffling through my notes I rediscovered:

vidindaĵo
sight worth seeing, sight of interest
melo kaj sciuro ludantaj ŝakon estas vidindaĵo
a badger and a squirrel playing chess is a sight worth seeing

From vidi "to see", -ind "worth doing [root]", and -(basically "thing"): a thing worth seeing.

I always thought -ind was a very useful little suffix. You can probably imagine why the suffix usually operates on the verb form of the root that it gets squidged onto: because it'll always make sense as "worth [doing the action]":

ludinda
worth playing
leginda
worth reading

But the PMEG suggests a couple examples for which, intriguingly, that isn't the case:

mortinda
worthy of death (e.g. a crime or sin)
prezinda
worth the price

The PMEG suggests thinking of these as less uses of a suffix, and more as the use of the adjective built from the suffix inda "worth of" being joined with morto or prezo as a compound.

I'd be very interested to learn about other such compounds... but not thought of a good search method yet that won't just throw up lots of verbal usages!

On a side note... I just pushed an update for my practice with AI app. The "Mystery" page had GPT generate a mystery and three characters, which you have to interview in Esperanto to determine who is the culprit, with GPT playing those characters for the interviews.

But now I've added a 4th character, your "assistant" who, also played by GPT, doesn't know the solution, but does track what is said during the interviews. Then when you talk to the assistant, they will analyse what's been said and discuss the investigation's next steps with you. And you can keep going back and forth between interviews and assistant to tease out more details. Seems like GPT-4 can handle it pretty well from my early testing - such fun tech!
